PORTLAND, Conn. — The Portland Public Schools district in Connecticut has announced that both the high school and middle school will be closed on Wednesday, Oct. 8 due to a severe sewer backup at the complex on High Street.
The sewage backup was first reported by district officials late Tuesday morning. It reportedly occurred on the first floor of the high school.
The odor impacted the entire complex, where the middle school is also located, and students were sent home early. All after-school activities were also cancelled, as was Tuesday evening’s Board of Education meeting.
The district’s facilities team is working with the town’s sewer department and outside contractors to find a solution and sanitize the building thoroughly.
