DETROIT -- Slowly but surely on Tuesday night, Logan Gilbert summoned the alter-ego that’s been attached to the Mariners’ towering right-hander when pitching as a mad man.

The nickname is “Walter,” and it’s equally state-of-mind as it is human, the persona of a pitcher who’s as gentle as could be away from the mound but who slays with strikeouts on it. “ Walter ” hadn’t quite come out of his shell early in Game 3 of the American League Division Series at Comerica Park. But he was in full force by the time Seattle took a commanding lead en route to an 8-4 win over Detroit.
