A puffin — a bird not normally seen inland in Massachusetts — was found in Wrentham last weekend and is now rehabbing in Rhode Island.

The puffin was found the evening of Sunday, Oct. 5 on Robert Topham Drive near Lake Pearl in an area popular for birds, especially waterfowl, but miles from the ocean’s coast where it more normally would be spotted.

It was discovered by a “good Samaritan” in a backyard and was unable to fly, Wrentham/Plainville Animal Control Officer Alexandria Klenk said.

The puffin was taken to a bird rehabilitation center in Rhode Island.

“The bird seemed to be injured but as far as I know, recovering well at this time,” Klenk said.

It is a rare occurrence to see a puffin in Southern New England, and Klenk said she has never seen one in Massachusetts.
