Two young girls were taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon following a fire at their home in Vermont Knolls, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The fire was first reported around 5:10 p.m. on the 8500 block of South Vermont Avenue.

Responding fire crews found the fire burning in one unit of a seven-story apartment building, which officials said was being "held in check" by the unit's sprinkler system.

Video shared on the Citizen app showed rushing water from the upstairs apartment running down into a shared courtyard of the complex as firefighters attempted to gain entry into the apartment via the roof and front door.

Firefighters were eventually able to get inside and rescue two girls, ages 10 and 7, and carry them to safety.

Both girls were transported to a local hospit
