GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — New data from the FBI shows violent crime is dramatically dropping in the state of Michigan.

There were 43,615 violent crimes in Michigan reported in 2024, compared to 45,841 in 2023. There have been 26,098 violent crimes reported so far in 2025.

One of the reasons for this overall decline is the steady drop in violent crime in communities like Muskegon. Muskegon has seen a steady drop in violent crime since 2022.

“I think of this community as a whole, and that's the citizens that are the groups that are working towards this goal,” said Muskegon County Prosecutor D.J. Hilson.

Hilson said that community efforts in Muskegon, like development projects and youth initiatives, are getting to the heart of the matter when it comes to bringing down violent crime.
