VERMILLION, S.D. (KCAU) — The new Clay County South Dakota Law Enforcement Center and Jail in Vermillion is now open!
A ribbon-cutting and open house was held on October 7. The 54,000 square-foot facility will be the home for the Vermillion Police Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, 9-1-1 dispatch center, and emergency department.
People were able to take a tour of the new LEC and jail. The grand opening comes after voters approved a nearly $43 million bond in 2022. The new jail will house 54 beds and can add up to 44 more in the future.
Chairman Travis Mockler with the Clay County Commission said, “I’ve explained it to people that what we have currently is a bottle rocket. We’re moving into the space shuttle because it is, and it resembles nothing of what we currently have.”
