CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - New technology for the Cape Girardeau Fire Department is being called a game-changer.

It’s called the AquaEye.

It’s a hand-held sonar device that can now be used when searching for a victim or in a recovery effort.

Crews tested it out on Tuesday at Lakewood Drive.

It can tell the difference between debris and a human--turning a typical hours-long search into minutes.

“Time is very important in making a recovery or rescue. If we can get to a person, if it’s really cold water, let’s say less than an hour, we have a chance of reviving them and bringing them back,” said Battalion Chief Brad Dillow.

Another breakthrough, Chief Dillow says, is the safety of his dive team.
