Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has inadvertently used a picture of a skeletal Israeli hostage in a social media post about "the suffering of Palestinians".

The Israeli hostage pictured was Evyatar David, who Hamas has held captive for more than two years.

The image of David crouching down in a tunnel was used along images of an injured Palestinian man and a Palestinian boy being arrested by IDF soldiers.

Thunberg has more than 16 million followers on the social media platform.

The caption on the post reads: "The suffering of Palestinian prisoners is not a matter of opinion - it is a fact of systematic cruelty and dehumanisation."

"Humanity cannot be selective. Justice cannot have borders."

The hashtags 'AllEyeOnPalestine' and 'FreedomOfFlotilla' accompanied the post.
