SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

The Nov. 4 special election is just weeks away, and many California voters should have already gotten their ballots in the mail.

What makes this election different than others is that Californians will be asked only one question: Should the power to redraw the state's congressional lines be temporarily given to lawmakers?

If voters pass Proposition 50, it would do just that by allowing a Democratic majority to redistrict for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 elections. The effort to redraw the lines was spearheaded by Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democratic leaders as a response to President Donald Trump's urging of Texas to send more Republicans to Congress.
