KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) - On Tuesday, the City of Kinston unanimously approved a motion to approve a 4% electric rate cut.
The city voted to hold a public hearing to consider lowering its electric rates by 4% just weeks after residents voiced their frustrations over what they say are sharp increases in property tax bills.
The new reduction means that residents can now see about a $6.00 difference on their monthly utility bills.
Steve Miller, Kinston’s Public Services Director, says the city has worked hard to maintain its low prices, and that the reduction is a win considering the city hasn’t increased its rates since 2009.
Miller says the reduction comes at a time when the city recently paid off its debt with the North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency, resulting in an 8% deduction
