**Man Charged in Connection with Boating Death in Toronto Harbour** A 35-year-old man from Mississauga has been charged with criminal negligence causing death following a drowning incident near the Toronto Islands in August. Nasme Saqqa is accused of operating an illegal charter boat without the necessary commercial license and registration. According to Toronto Police, Saqqa allegedly picked up about 16 passengers who had paid for a private boat charter. He was reportedly the sole captain of the vessel, named the Slow Motion, and had no crew members on board. On August 23, one of the passengers fell overboard into Lake Ontario and was later found dead. This incident occurred at the end of a challenging summer for boating in Toronto Harbour, where both legal and illegal charters compete for customers in a growing market. This incident marks at least the second boating-related death in the harbour in two years. In June 2023, another individual, Abeeku Arhin, died after slipping from a party boat. The Toronto Police Marine Unit, with assistance from Transport Canada, investigated the August incident. Saqqa was arrested in Toronto on October 7. Authorities are urging the public to verify that any commercial boat charter is registered as a commercial vessel rather than a pleasure craft. They also recommend confirming that the operator possesses a valid commercial license, along with proper insurance and registration. Police are seeking information from anyone who may have hired the vessel for a private charter or has details about the incident. They can be reached at 416-808-1400 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
