It didn’t take Nathan MacKinnon long into the new NHL season to rewrite the Colorado Avalanche record books.
With an assist on a second-period goal by Martin Necas against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, MacKinnon passed Joe Sakic for the most points in franchise history.
The assist was the 1,016th point of MacKinnon’s career, and it came in the first game of his 13th season with Colorado.
Since being drafted by the Avalanche No. 1 overall in 2013, MacKinnon has recorded 367 goals and 649 assists in 871 regular-season games.
MacKinnon came into Tuesday’s game tied in games played and points with the Hall of Famer, as Sakic recorded his 1,015 points over 870 career games with the Avalanche.
