The top collegiate mountain bike racers in the country will converge on Powderhorn Mountain Resort this week.

They will compete in the annual USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships.

Racing will start Thursday and extend through Sunday (Oct. 9-12.)

The college cyclists will be chasing host Colorado Mesa University, the reigning national mountain bike champions. The Mavericks will be racing for their sixth consecutive national title.

After claiming championships in California, North Carolina, Arkansas and Colorado (Purgatory, twice), Colorado Mesa this year will race for the title on home trails.

“Most collegiate programs don’t have the opportunity (to host national championship cycling events) … a unique opportunity,” Colorado Mesa cycling coach Brian Flaherty said
