A MAN has died after he was shot on a property in the Upper Hunter while hunting, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to Rotherwood Road at Cassilis, roughly 50 kilometres northwest of Merriwa, about 8.50am on Wednesday.

Initial reports to police had indicated a man had suffered a gunshot wound.

Officers from Hunter Valley Police District attended a rural property in the area.

Upon arrival on the scene, police were told the injured man suffered the wound while hunting on the property.

Paramedics were also called to the scene, but were unable to help the 71-year-old.

The man was formally declared dead at the scene, police confirmed.

A crime scene has been established on the property, police said on Wednesday afternoon.
