Cousin of Zubeen Garg Arrested in Death Investigation
The investigation into the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has escalated with the arrest of his cousin, Sandipan Garg, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Assam. Sandipan was taken into custody by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) shortly after he appeared for questioning at their headquarters in Guwahati. He is expected to be presented in court later today.
Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19 while swimming in Singapore, where he was attending the North East India Festival. Sandipan was reportedly on the yacht with Zubeen during the incident. He had previously claimed on social media that he had "fully cooperated" with the SIT during extensive interrogations.
This arrest marks the fifth in the ongoing investigation. Prior to Sandipan's detention, four others were arrested, including Zubeen's manager Siddharth Sharma and event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, both of whom are facing charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Two of Zubeen's bandmates, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta, were also taken into custody and are currently in police remand for further questioning.
The SIT, established under the direction of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is exploring various angles, including potential foul play and financial disputes related to the event. The case has drawn significant attention in Assam, with many fans and colleagues of Zubeen Garg calling for justice and transparency in the investigation. The authorities have also issued summons to 11 NRIs believed to be key witnesses, asking them to join the investigation by October 6.
As the probe continues, the public remains eager for answers regarding the circumstances surrounding the singer's untimely death.
