The government shutdown is all about responsible spending. The government shutdown is about healthcare. It’s about gaining power in Washington. It’s about resisting President Trump. It’s about the next election. It’s about doing what’s best for America.

Those arguments had some weight before Oct. 1, when Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill dropped the ball. Proposals from both sides that would have funded the government past that date failed in the Senate. It went down to the wire.
