Paddlers racing to the bottom of Mobile Bay

Usually, the Alabama Scenic River Trail, a river system spanning hundreds of miles from north to south, sees only fish and other wildlife traversing its calm and mostly slow-moving waters.

But every autumn since 2019, this waterway has grabbed the attention of international athletes and competitive paddlers seeking not just Alabama’s most pristine wilderness, but the longest solo river paddle race in the U.S.
