The Loaf and Ladle, an iconic restaurant known for its homemade soups and breads, is returning to downtown Exeter after a 12-year hiatus.

Brothers Aidan and Andrew Ulery, the sons of the last owner, Meredith Pease-Stolper Mygatt, are opening in space formerly occupied by St. Anthony’s Bakery at 231 Water St.

They plan to open this fall after reworking the flow in the space to the cafeteria-style ordering system of the original Loaf and Ladle. The 25-seat spot will be open for lunch with soups and breads, including the popular anadama.

News of the Loaf’s return has been met with enthusiasm.

“It feels good. I’m a little nervous just because of how many people have commented. The pressure is on,” said Aidan, 46. “But at the same time, I think we will be able to give them what they expect.
