Renters will have the right to keep pets for the first time under new laws passed by MSPs last week. ‌

When the rules come into force, tenants will be able to request to keep cats, dogs and other animals in their home, with landlords no longer able to “unreasonably refuse”. ‌

The measure is one of a raft of new protections, including rent controls, to be included in Holyrood’s new Housing Bill, which is expected to gain royal ascent within weeks. ‌

One tenant from Edinburgh told the Sunday Mail how she needed to pay an extra £400 “pet deposit” to secure a flat where she could keep her two cats.
