LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - As part of Fire Prevention Month, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is warning residents about the fire risks associated with smoking and vaping.
The department reports that smoking remains the leading cause of fatal fires in Michigan, accounting for 48% of fire deaths in 2024 and 25% so far in 2025.
Many of these fires begin when cigarettes, hot ashes, or other smoking materials are left unattended or improperly discarded.
MDHHS urges residents to take extra precautions and always dispose of smoking materials safely to prevent potentially deadly fires.
