Kinshasa: Eastern Congo is facing a deepening healthcare emergency, with nearly 90 percent of clinics in North and South Kivu provinces running out of essential medicines. A recent survey conducted by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reveals that ongoing conflict, looting, and disrupted supply chains have left many health facilities struggling to provide care. Staff shortages affect around 40 percent of clinics, and 13 percent are completely nonfunctional, leaving thousands of residents at risk.
The situation has worsened following a major offensive by the M23 rebel group earlier this year, which resulted in thousands of deaths and the seizure of Goma. Since January 2025, medical supply shortages have been persistent, and patients are experiencing delays in treatment
