Hyundai has recalled more than 135,000 Santa Fe vehicles because an improperly installed motor cover could lead to an electrical short, potentially causing a crash.

Hyundai issued a recall for 135,386 2024-2025 Santa Fe vehicles on Oct. 2 for improperly installed B+ positive terminal covers on the starter motor assembly. If improperly installed, the cover could come into contact with the cooling fan assembly, causing an electrical short, which could lead to a crash.

Hyundai estimates about 1% of eligible vehicles are impacted by improperly installed covers, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall report.

As of Oct. 2, Hyundai was aware of one report filed in November 2024 that confirmed signs of a thermal event, like an electrical short, according to the recall report. No accidents, injuries or fatalities have been attributable to the recall in the U.S.

What Hyundai vehicles are recalled?

The recall is for 2024-2025 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles manufactured between Dec. 28, 2023, and July 7, 2025, according to the NHTSA recall report.

What to do if your vehicle is recalled

Owners of the recalled vehicle will receive information by mail on how to bring their vehicle to a Hyundai dealer for inspection and reinstallation of the terminal cover, if necessary, according to the NHTSA recall report. The dealership will perform the reinstallation for free.

Hyundai will also provide car owners with reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses incurred to obtain the reinstallation, according to the recall report.
