A senior police officer has thanked the Jewish community for their 'overwhelming support' following the Manchester synagogue attack .

Insp Martin Smallwood, from GMP Bury , told how members of the public gave officers gifts including cans of coke, crisps and a thank-you card as they patrolled the streets in the wake of the attack on Heaton Park synagogue in Crumpsall. He said: "I was genuinely moved by the overwhelming support and gratitude expressed by members of the Jewish community."

Insp Smallwood was speaking as the investigation into the attack continues. Terrorist Jihad Al-Shamie drove into worshippers outside the Middleton Road synagogue before attacking them with a knife.
