Ryan Callahan has announced he is stepping away from ESPN.

The former New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning forward, who retired in 2019, had served as a studio and game analyst for the network since 2021.

Before joining ESPN, Callahan got his break in sports media with NHL Network, joining the channel soon after his 13-year hockey career had ended.

Taking to social media on Tuesday, when he was notably absent from ESPN's season-opening coverage, the New York native explained what led to his departure.

"For all those asking, I am taking a step away from ESPN this year," Callahan posted on X.

"It has been a great four years with the worldwide leader in sports.

"I’m going to miss working with all the great people there, but I wanted to spend more time with my young family.
