The family of a flight nurse rescued from underneath the wreck of a helicopter that crashed in the US have described her as a “tough and strong woman”.

Suzie Smith, as well as a male pilot and female paramedic, were in a medical chopper that plummeted onto Sacramento’s Highway 50 on Monday night.

All three remain in a critical condition in hospital, with Smith’s loved ones saying the resident of Redding — 160km of the Californian capital — had suffered multiple serious injuries.

“Those who know Suzie know that she is a tough and strong woman,” her family said in a statement, reported ABC10 .

“Additionally, she has an amazing faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

“If anyone can overcome these challenges, it’s Sue.
