ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Former FBI director James Comey will argue he is the victim of a retribution campaign by President Donald Trump as he seeks to dismiss federal charges against him, a lawyer representing him in his federal criminal case said Wednesday.

Comey made his first appearance in a federal courtroom in Alexandria to face charges of obstruction and lying to Congress. He pleaded not guilty to both counts and asked for a jury trial, which was set for Jan. 5.

Comey is being represented by Patrick Fitzgerald, a former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois who was appointed Special Counsel by Comey in 2003 to oversee the investigation into the Valerie Plame affair.
