Two people who were found shot dead in a Village de L'Est apartment early Wednesday morning were likely killed in a murder-suicide, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

The shooting was reported to police at 7:30 a.m. in the 14700 block of Chef Menteur Highway, where officers found a man and woman wounded in an apartment. Paramedics pronounced them dead on scene, police said.

NOPD spokesperson Reese Harper told reporters outside the Chateau d'Orleans apartment complex Wednesday morning that children were present during the shooting and will be connected with support services.

Harper didn't say how many children were on scene or how they were related to those involved in the shooting. It's unclear whether the shooting involved a domestic dispute, he said.
