The agency overseeing Toledo Bend Reservoir in western Louisiana should ditch plans to sell water to Texas and instead focus on conserving water for Louisiana, two key state legislative committee chairmen say.

Rep. Brett Geymann, R-Lake Charles, and Sen. Bob Hensgens, R-Abbeville, say they strongly oppose such a sale. They lead the two natural resources committees that must bless any water sale from the reservoir.

"As chairman of the legislative committees charged with protecting Louisiana's natural resources, we urge you to abandon these plans and safeguard the long-term interests of our people, economy and environment," Geymann and Hensgens wrote to the reservoir authority. "Toledo Bend is vital to Louisiana residents, businesses and wildlife."
