Finding good food in unsuspecting places feels like a treasure hunt.

When it comes to the Baton Rouge Department of Public Safety’s cafeteria, there may as well be an X marking the spot.

The combination of Southern, home-cooked-style food, warm camaraderie and low prices makes the cafeteria feel secure, out of harm's way. Well, that, and the fact that it’s the public safety cafeteria. It is probably one of the safest places in Baton Rouge.

The food on the menu at the 7901 Independence Blvd. facility is cooked by inmates recruited across the state.

The staff includes four civilians and 10 inmates feeding 250-300 people on an average day, said cafeteria manager Teresa Bernard. On days the department holds a class, the cafeteria staff knows to expect more hungry stomachs.
