The anxiety surrounding the transfer portal at the end of the season has now been eased, at least a bit.

On Tuesday, the NCAA Division I Administrative Council voted to adopt the proposed single transfer portal window, which will take place from January 2 to January 16. The portal officially opens the day after the conclusion of the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, and players on the two teams participating in the CFP national championship game will have an additional five-day window to enter the portal from Jan. 20-24.

The NCAA has also changed the rules regarding transferring after coaching changes. While players were previously given a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal when a coach was fired, they will now have a 15-day window to enter the portal following the hiring or announcement of a new coach.

This is likely an attempt to stop players from "opting out" and entering the transfer portal immediately when a coach is fired during the season. Players at UCLA, Virginia Tech, Arkansas and Oklahoma State are grandfathered in under the previous rules, and the 30-day transfer window remains open for them.

This decision came on the heels of a decision made last month, which eliminated the 15-day post-spring transfer portal window. Now, players will not have the option to transfer following spring practice, barring a late coaching change.

There will likely be legal challenges on antitrust grounds ahead, but at least for now, the NCAA has eased the concerns of coaches by moving to a one-time portal window that begins after the vast majority of teams' seasons have concluded.
