SEATTLE, Washington — A $12.5 million settlement has been reached to end a class-action lawsuit accusing Block, Inc., the parent company of Cash App, of helping users send unwanted text messages to Washington residents through its “Invite Friends” program.

The case, Bottoms v. Block, Inc. , claimed the company violated Washington’s Commercial Electronic Mail Act and Consumer Protection Act by “substantially assisting” users who sent referral texts without prior consent .

Block, formerly known as Square Inc., denied any wrongdoing and says it has complied with all state and federal laws. The company maintained the lawsuit “is not well grounded in law or fact,” according to the settlement agreement filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.
