The Trump administration has sent letters to nine universities inviting them to join a “compact" to agree to certain stipulations in order to receive federal funding, including research grants and contracts, and funding for academic departments.

In the letters entitled "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education," the Trump White House offers priority funding for universities that agree to the compact, but says that those that don’t will lose federal funding. Any school that agrees to the compact but violates it will have to return any funding they received to the federal government.

The nine universities contacted are: Vanderbilt University, Dartmouth College, University of Pennsylvania, University of Southern California, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of T
