More than three decades after a beaten and battered 2-year-old boy died in a city hospital, a Reading woman has been charged in his death.

The Berks County District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday announced that first- and third-degree murder charges have been filed against Sandra Guadalupe-Castro, 57, of Reading.

According to court documents, Guadalupe-Castro was arraigned Tuesday before District Judge Brian K. Strand in Reading Central Court and placed in Berks County Jail without bail.

The charges stem from a January 1993 incident that was recently reopened as a cold case.

According to the district attorney’s office:

The boy was transported from a home in the 1000 block of Franklin Street to St. Joseph Hospital in Reading on Jan. 8. He died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
