The Camden City School District sent out a letter to families on Sunday warning them of a new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement program that offers unaccompanied immigrant children money in exchange for self-deporting.
According to a memo obtained by NBC News , ICE sent letters on Friday offering unaccompanied minors 14 or older $2,500 to return to their country of origin voluntarily.
ICE officials said in an email to Mosaic that the program is initially being offered to 17-year olds and is “strictly voluntary.”
Still, Camden City School District officials, who learned of the letter through immigration advocates, urged parents to continue sending their children to school, adding that the letter does not change their rights or those of their children.
