NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (WWLP) - The city of North Adams is launching a pilot program aiming to combat alcohol nip bottle litter in the community.

The inception of this program began at a City Council meeting in September, following ongoing community discussions regarding excess nip bottle litter in the city. An initiative was then created to offer residents a five-cent refund for each clean nip bottle returned to the redemption center at Berkshire Family and Individual Resources (BFAIR).

Led by City Councilor Keith Bona and Benjamin Lamb from the NAMAzing Initiative in collaboration with BFAIR, the program seeks to decrease nip bottle waste and demonstrate the value of a potential statewide nip bottle program.

In Massachusetts, over 25 million nip bottles are sold each year. In June of 2024
