FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno County Supervisor Buddy Mendes is retiring.
Former Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims announced she is running for the position.
The announcement was made during a press conference on Wednesday.
Mendes said he is stepping back as supervisor to spend time with his family, but will continue to work on various boards.
Mendes has been a supervisor for District 4 since 2015. The district represents areas such as Orange Cove and Coalinga.
He has also served on the Riverdale Unified School District Board of Trustees and the Southwest Transportation Agency.
His current term ends on January 4, 2027.
Mendes said he believes Mims is the best replacement for him because of her knowledge of the count, serving 16 years as the sheriff.
