HARRISBURG — Tensions ran high in the Capitol on the 100th day of the state budget impasse, with lawmakers from both parties preparing to leave town without a mutually agreeable budget on the table, worsening the financial crunch on counties, schools and human service agencies.
There were public statements, news conferences and accusations by both sides in a General Assembly where Republicans control the Senate and Democrats the House.
Gov. Josh Shapiro, speaking during an appearance in Lackawanna County, accused Republicans of “playing politics.” A few hours later, House Democratic Majority Leader Matt Bradford of Montgomery County said Republicans were avoiding a deal in an attempt to damage the political standing of Mr. Shapiro — who is expected to seek re-election next year.
