LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson County Public Schools celebrated the groundbreaking of a $30 million project designed to give Okolona Elementary students a new place to learn.

“It’s our duty to make smart, strategic investments that secure the success of our students and the long-term health of our district,” said first-year Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood.

JCPS is currently facing a budget shortfall of $188 million, but Robert Fulk, chief operating officer with the district, said the money committed to building the school is unaffected.

“The building fund is separate; that goes into a completely separate pot of money that is typically bonded out, so the building fund has not been touched,” he said. “We continue on our track to build more than 20 new schools over the next eight years as p
