NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — After being stopped multiple times, crews have resumed demolition of the De Gaulle Manor Apartments in Algiers.

"This is sending a message that our community will be clean. Communities come first," said Councilman Freddie King.

One nearby resident says the complex used to be a vibrant place to live, but after several years, it became a safety concern at night.

"People want to be safe. They don't want crime. And if we can get this refurbished, rehabilitated, something new built here, it'll just be great," said Anne Moll.

Last year, Durr Heavy Construction began demolishing the property, but work stopped due to a change in the scope of work, as well as unexpected asbestos abatement costs.
