RANSON — What began with questioning of an individual over a missing or stolen cellphone in Middletown, Virginia, on Wednesday morning ended with multiple people injured and vehicles damaged.

According to a press release issued by the Frederick County (Virginia) Sheriff’s Office, Middletown Police Chief Gary Benedict was handling the call about the cellphone when the suspect decided he no long was willing to cooperate and attempted to flee, striking the chief with his vehicle as he did so. The interaction between the chief and the suspect, later identified as Juan Vashaun Payne, 41, of Martinsburg, began at a 7-11 convenience store in Middletown.
