Iowa wrestling's first commit for the 2027 recruiting class has arrived.

New Jersey's Sonny Amato announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes on Oct. 8, choosing Iowa over Iowa State, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech. He is ranked No. 1 nationally at 150 pounds for the class of 2027 by Flowrestling.

Amato won a New Jersey state title as a freshman in 2024 at 144 pounds, then took third at the same weight as a sophomore this past season at state with Rumson-Fair Haven Regional high school. Amato projects to wrestle in the middleweights in college, wrestling as high as 144 pounds in high school and 70 kilograms (approximately 154 pounds) this spring at the U.S. Open.
