HOUSTON (KIAH) — The Pentagon has confirmed that 200 Texas National Guard soldiers are stationed in Chicago under the command of President Donald Trump.
These soldiers are deployed to protect federal functions, personnel, and property, and their duties include crowd control and de-escalation at protests, the Pentagon said.
The soldiers are not permitted to make arrests but can detain individuals until local law enforcement arrives.
The legality of this deployment is being contested in court, with the state of Illinois arguing that the move is unconstitutional, while the federal government maintains that the President has the authority to deploy the National Guard in this manner. • Military personnel in uniform, with the Texas National Guard patch on, are seen at the U.S. Army Reserve
