LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) -- On Wednesday, a Long Island woman is reuniting with her birth mother after being separated at birth and placed for adoption without her mother's consent.
Her mother lives in Chile, and the two waited over four decades to see each other.
For over 40 years, Kate Saar has been apart from her birth mother, Maria Paulina Gonzalez. "From what I was told, she gave me up for adoption because she wanted me to have a better life, so I was happy with that," said Saar.
But in February 2024, during a trip to Chile, Kate was left perplexed by a comment made by a tour guide. "I wonder if you were part of the stolen children out of Chile," Saar said, recounting his words.
During the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet Ugarte in Chile between the 1970s and 1990s, thou
