Rescue teams in Girdwood have recovered the remains of one of three men caught in an avalanche earlier this year, authorities confirmed Tuesday.
The Alaska Mountain Rescue Group and Girdwood Volunteer Fire Department, with support from DPS HELO 3, recovered the body of a man on October 3. His remains have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and positive identification.
Officials say the man’s identity will be released once confirmed.
Recovery efforts continue for the other two men, who were caught in the avalanche on March 4 near the West Fork of 20 Mile River. At the time, guides from the heliskiing operation used avalanche beacons to locate the men, who were buried between 40 and nearly 100 feet deep.
