MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Dozens of parents, school staff and students gathered Wednesday to demand justice for Capital Preparatory Middletown Charter School after the Connecticut State Board of Education voted not to fund its opening.

The Board of Education made the decision in a meeting at North Haven High School, despite emotional appeals from community members who were urging the board to reconsider. The state originally approved the charter school in 2023, ranking it first among seven charter applications that year. However, Capital Prep was later removed from the list of schools slated to receive state funding.

Supporters said that decision was unfair and violates the state’s own process.
