MADISON, Wis. -- As homecoming weekend approaches, bars in downtown Madison can expect extra business.

But the busy week comes just after the Madison Police Department announced it would be changing the way it patrols underage drinking in the area.

"W e've always been doing bar checks, tavern safety checks, and, they've looked differently throughout the years," said Madison Police Department Central District Captain Kipp Hartman.

Hartman says officers will focus less on large-scale operations and instead perform quick checks--monitoring lines, certifying bartenders' licenses, ensuring bars aren't over capacity and offering amnesty to customers willing to turn over their fake IDs.
