WASHINGTON – Alex Ovechkin waited at the end of the line for his turn to be introduced as part of the Washington Capitals’ opening night lineup against the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena on Wednesday.

Beginning his 17th season as Capitals captain, Ovechkin is used to his being the last number and name called. There was something new public address announcer Wes Johnson added this season, though, as Ovechkin strode down the red carpet that led to the ice from the corner of the rink.

“And finally, the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring leader,” Johnson bellowed, his voice nearly being drowned out by the roar of the sellout crowd of 18,347 by the time he completed the introduction with, “your captain, No. 8, Alex Ovechkin.” That was followed was followed by chants of, “Ovi! Ovi!”
