TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Two weeks after cyclist Enrique Mercado was killed in a confrontation on the Loop, dozens of community members gathered at Wednesday’s city council meeting to advocate for increased safety measures on the bike path.
Mercado, known as “Kix” to friends, was stabbed to death on the Loop while participating in his weekly bike ride with the Tuesday Night Ride group.
"He’s the life of the party. Ever since I met him, he was always drawing people together. No matter your age, no matter your ethnicity, he’d always pull you in and treat you like family,” said Mark Urias, a Tuesday Night Ride member and friend of Mercado’s.
Urias said ongoing issues with homelessness and unauthorized individuals on the bike path contribute to safety problems.
