India's telecom sector’s contribution to the GDP will grow to 20 percent over the next 10 to 12 years from current 12-14 percent, communications minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on October 9.
"The role of the government in this sector is less of a regulator but more of a facilitator," the minister said during a press conference on Day 2 of the India Mobile Congress 2025. The sector is a deregulated and there is "tremendous amount of competition”.
The government has collaborated with various ministries and the private sector to develop an indigenous 4G technology stack, making India the fifth country in the world to possess the capability, Scindia said. It was accomplished in a record 20 months, from the initial concept to a full 4G stack.
