SCBA Terminates Membership of Lawyer Who Attempted to Throw Shoe at CJI Gavai

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has terminated the membership of advocate Rakesh Kishore with immediate effect following his attempt to throw a sports shoe at chief justice of India (CJI) justice BR Gavai inside the courtroom on 6 October 2025. In a strongly worded resolution, the SCBA executive committee described advocate Kishore’s act as “reprehensible, disorderly, and intemperate behaviour utterly unbecoming of an officer of the court.” The committee unanimously concluded that the conduct was a grave breach of professional ethics, courtroom decorum, and the dignity of the Supreme Court. It added that such behaviour amounted to a direct assault on judicial independence, the sanctity of courtroom proceedings, and the long-standing relationship of mutual respect and trust b
